Abstract

Work zone analysis involves determining the safety and mobility impacts of highway maintenance and construction projects. Analyzing work zones impacts can help agencies improve their decision making. This article describes modeling and simulation tools that can support the efforts of transportation agencies in conducting work zone analysis. These resources include tools that were designed specifically for work zone-related analysis as well as general traffic analysis models and simulation tools. In addition, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has developed two guides that deal specifically with work zone modeling and simulation. FHWA has also developed a workshop series to assist practitioners in applying the concepts in the guides. Case studies are provided that illustrate how work zone analysis tools can be used.
