Abstract

The article describes the Simplified Location of Information Deficiencies (SLIDE) procedure whereby highway locations that have information deficiencies can be easily identified so that the need for corrective action can be evaluated. It is a simple field survey technique done within a vehicle and without the need for special equipment. The procedurre involves a 2-person team driving each direction of selected road segments with the driver commenting verbally on whether or not the information provided meets his expectations. The details are given of each of the 3 steps of the procedure: establishing expectancies; performing running commentary; and investigating information deficiencies. The procedure was evaluated by several state and local engineers and judged to be a useful means of identifying potentially hazardous locations on 2-lane rural highways. Application of a SLIDE procedure can offer substantial benefits by preventing unfavorable rulings in tort litigation.
