Abstract

The results are given of a study which conducted a questionnaire-type survey of institute members working for state and local agencies to identify techniques in current use by the agencies to determine when a left turn phase should be installed at a signalized intersection. The study summarized the responses from each agency, as well as assembled comprehensive bibliographic information on the subject. The survey methodology is described, and the results are tabulated. It is recommended that the findings be used by the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for establishing techniques for national use.
