Abstract

This article presents a design that uses American road elements for the European concept of Verkehrsberuhigung, which means 'traffic calming.' The primary aim of such a concept is safety but it should also contribute to urban revitalization, as such designs have done in Europe. The site selection for the work is described. The techniques of Verkehrsberuhigung chosen for implementation and the elements of the design are described. These include concrete pavers; clay brick crosswalks; 9-ft lanes; curb bulbs; reflecting bollards; stop signs and lower speeds; and angle-in parking. Expected crash reduction is discussed.
