Abstract

This article presents an overview and brief summary of the principal changes to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials policies on geometric design. The revisions to the 1990 'Policy" fall into 3 main categories: provision of additional information on design data for 5 additional design vehicles, guidelines for designs to accomodate the elderly, and the 0.12 ft/ft superelevation rate; changing all aspects of the 'Policy' to conform with the 1985 HCM (Highway Capacity Manual) and the 'Roadside Design Guide'; inclusion of design policy changes that redefine certain parameters. The revisions presented here occur in the following chapters of the 'Policy': Chaper II - Design Controls and Criteria; Chapter III - Elements of Design; Chapter IV - Cross Section Elements; Chapter V - Local Roads and Streets; Chapter VI - Collector Roads and Streets; Chapter VII - Rural and Urban Arterials; Chapter IX - At-Grade Intersections; Chapter X - Grade Separations and Interchanges.
