Abstract

In an effort to gauge the effectiveness of campus master planning and evaluate recent traffic and parking conditions, a survey was made of 237 public and private colleges and universities nationwide, with student populations ranging from 500 to 45,000. Information gathered in this survey are discussed, and it is pointed out that it can be used by administrators to formulate policies or make technical decisions regarding campus development and transportation systems. It is noted that campus transportation planning should be included in the local urban transportation plan, and an assessment was attempted of the level of the cooperative planning effort between a college and the surrounding area. Most of the insititutions surveyed had adopted a master plan for campus development, but most of them were perceived as traffic circulation and parking problems. Lack of funding was an impediment to the implementation of the master plan. It is also pointed out that more parking may not always be the answer to the problem, but to encourage alternative modes of transportation. Restriction of vehicle registration and student parking is another strategy.
