Abstract

Research is reported which developed information based on travel-time savings from a passing lane for different traffic composition and roadway geometry and driver characteristics. The study obtained and analyzed accident data for all 2-lane, 2-way, Michigan highways and for those sections having passing lanes in order to obtain the potential benefits in terms of fewer accidents. It also evaluated passing-relief lanes on the basis of cost-benefit analyses for different combinations of traffic composition and geometrics. The details of the study are described in which a calibrated model was used to study the operational benefits gained by providing passing lanes on 2-lane highways. The details of the simulation results and the cost-benefit analysis (total benefits, sensitivity analysis) are also described.
