Abstract

This paper discusses the estimation of expected free-flow operating speed (Vo) in horizontal curves. The study, which is based on a 2-lane rural highway in Utah, shows that Vo is a nonlinear function of the degree of curvature, and that Vo at point of curvature as well as point of tangent are significantly different from Vo at middle of curve. These differences lead to different conclusions regarding the consistency of a design. It is suggested that consistency be evaluated on the basis of the difference between Vo at point of tangent and design speed. The paper describes details of the study sites and data collection, and discusses the analysis of speeds, and speed-curvature relationships.
