Abstract

In this study, the nature and extent of urban truck freeway accidents and their consequences were determined as a function of vehicle type, and traffic and roadway characteristics. The study is limited to urban freeways with large total volumes (minimum 100,000 average daily traffic) and a minimum of 5% large truck traffic. The study involved a review of the literature and the analysis of accident and operation data from selected urban freeway sites. The study methodology is described, and the economic consequences of truck accidents are discussed including accident costs, delay costs, vehicle operating costs, accident clean-up costs, and total economic cost of truck accidents. The study findings are listed.
