Abstract

This article describes the problem, objectives, work plan and status of a project at the University of Washington which is investigating high-occupancy vehicle improvements on signalized intersections in Seattle, Washington. The project investigated the state-of-the-art techniques for providing HOV incentives in arterial routes, generated HOV alternatives for use on arterials in Wahsington State's urban areas, and simulated the operation of selected HOV improvements in two arterial case-study locations. The study also evaluated the selected arterial HOV improvements on the bases of the simulation of the 2 arterials studied and of field observations from existing arterial HOV Lanes in the area. The details of the study are described. Violation studies are described, and strategies are set forth for arterial HOV facilities. Implications of the current research project are discussed.
