Abstract

Information presented at the Workshop on the Highway Mobility and Safety of Older Drivers and Pedestrians held in 1985 in Washington, D.C. is discussed, and it is pointed out that environmentally controllable factors such as the condition of roadways, lane markings, and signs, may be a significant component in driving and pedestrian problems for the elderly. Reports indicate that the elderly driver involved in an accident may be more a victim of his environment than his age. Road conditions, sign design and lighting do not adequately take into account the needs of the elderly. The most siginificant factor relates to reduced visual capability that comes with age. Visual acuity may be aided by increased light level. A number of corrective measures suggested at the workshop are listed.
