Abstract

An overview is presented that provides a sampling of the many innovative programs and projects taking place across the country that have the potential to significantly influence the approach to transportation safety and mobility issues and problems. These innovations are institutional as well as technological, supply-side as well as demand-side, and 'low technology' as well as 'high technology.' The sampling includes the following: Snoqualine Pass - 'Travel Aid' variable speed limit system; the National Incident Management Coalition established in 1991; San Antonio Freeway Management System; Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) work-zone safety devices; Boston Central Artery Project/Third Harbor Tunnel Project; City of Los Angeles Traffic Control System; Philadelphia Employer Traveler Information System; and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority Pike-Pass System.
