Abstract

This research designed a system to monitor the dispensing rate of the glass beads used in the paint for road striping. The system used optical sensors and allows the operator to detect any malfunction and adjust the flow rate during striping operation. This article describes the details of the materials and methods including the optical sensor, laboratory test, and field test. The test results are presented. It was found that the bead level and operating pressure of the supply tank significantly affected the actual flow rate of the beads. The optical sensor measurements were within 6% error at full tank bead level, and within 12% at 3/4 and half level. In order to prevent over- or under-applications of the glass beads, the tank pressure should be properly adjusted.
