Abstract

It is described how Gwinnett County, Georgia adopted a 2-pronged program to deal with residential speeding complaints: eliminate through traffic on local streets by selectively closing streets; and a neighborhood speed watch program. This program is described here and is specifically designed to address the speeding problem in self-contained subdivisions that experience little or no through traffic. The program relies on community spirit and peer pressure to increase awareness among motorists. Critieria that must be met in order to be included in the program are set forth. The program has been very successful and the results in some subdivisions have been significant. In those areas where they were not, residential speed complaints virtually ceased with the introduction of the program.
