Abstract

The problems posed by raised medians are listed and discussed. Raised medians are fixed obstacles, they do not prevent head-on collisions, and they inhibit left-turn and crossing movements. Raised medians often result in totally uncontrolled access. It is noted that life cycle cost should not be a factor used for determining median type, and that the key to improved safety is access management. The article emphasizes that flush medians, as a general rule, are the most effective.
