Abstract

A literature search was made on the use of multiway stops, and local studies were conducted in Boulder, Colorado on their effectiveness and driver compliance. The purpose of the study was to identify the issues related to the use of multiway stops and to help citizens understand some of the negative side effects of their use. This article was developed as an information piece that could be used as a basis for the development of public information strategies. The issues discussed in this article include the following: compliance; speed control; safety; motorist delay; excessive restrictions on the public; environmental effects; pedestrian exposure; clarity of traffic control; and legal responsiblities.
