Abstract

It is noted that ITE (Institute of Transportation Engineers) members must continue their efforts to reduce the current number of injuries and fatalities on U.S. roadways. A major step must be taken to overcome the barriers in the way of a dramatic improvement in road safety. Society must reject the acceptance of highway deaths and injuries as a fait accompli, and mobilize all resources to combat the problem. At an international congress in Israel this year, 23 nations requested national safety goals, integrated and comprehensive safety efforts, expanded research, increased public awareness, high-priority political support, and international, interdisciplinary cooperation and information exchange. These broad objectives must be expanded and integrated into action at all levels of society.
