Abstract

In 1984, the New York State Department of Transportation initiated a research project to evaluate the relative safety and cost effectiveness of using plastic drums instead of steel drums. Favorable safety benefits and lifetime unit costs resulted in New York State joining the growing list of states that have switched to plastic drums in construction projects. Studies are described that show that a substantial number of work zone accidents occur in the taper and the cross-over where channelization devices are located. The high incidence of night accidents indicates the need for highly visible and properly installed and maintained channelizing devices. The frequency of accidents involving drums has led to the use of forgiving devices such as plastic drums. Tests have shown plastic drums to be safer than steel drums. The advantages and disadvantages of plastic drums are noted, and their types and characteristics are described.
