Abstract

The article traces many safety features in today's automobiles to the research and development necessitated for sports racing cars. Some of the developments include wheels with detachable rims, overhead valves, rear-view mirrors, front-wheel brakes, rear-engine cars, engine specifications that promote economic fuel consumption, hydraulic shock absorbers, specialized fuels, tuned intake and exhaust systems, spark plugs, and so forth. The scientific methods of testing materials for fatigue and structural safety, along with new safety equipment such as seat belts and shoulder harnesses have also made cars much safer.
