Abstract

The article reports studies undertaken to assess the impact of Tennessee's safety belt legislation. The first study which is ongoing involves periodic mointoring of the actual use of safety belts at selected locations across the state. The other study, which has recently been completed, focused on the attitude of Tennessee residents toward the safety belt law, as well as their attitudes on the use of safety belts in general. The studies found that the mandatory belt use law has significantly increased belt use statewide. The percentage of drivers and right front-seat occupants observed to be wearing safety belts has increased from 26 % in the fall of 1986 to 41 % in the spring of 1989. The level of education was found to have a positive relationship to their belt use. These and other study findings are discussed.
