Abstract

A comprehensive study was made by Arizona Department of Transportation of two existing school crossings on a state highway within the city limits of Tucson. The evaluation was based on the analysis of speed samples collected before and after the installation of flashers. It was found that flashing beacons at school crossings in Tucson, Arizona fail to reduce vehicle speeds and the number of violations of the 15 mph speed limit. On the contrary, it is apparent that, when flashing beacons are used, operating speeds and the number of violations increase significantly.
