Abstract

Design principles are presented here that should be applied in roadway system planning for suburban areas, and which would lead to more effective and efficient roadway operations in the suburbs. Designing for regional and subarea roadway systems for developments should provide multiple route choices. System continuity should be striven for, and all site plans should be reviewed to determine effects on the continuity of existing and planned routes. It is noted that some arterials should not interchange with major freeways, and the dangers of the first arterial intersections on both sides of a freeway interchange are pointed out. It is also noted that one-way streets may have application in suburban areas, and that freeway exit and mainline capacity must be matched.
