Abstract

This study developed a Monte Carlo simulation model for determining the design lengths of left-turn lanes with separate phases. The simulation model is then used to generate distributions of queue lengths over commonly observed ranges of left turn volumes, cycle lengths and green times to provide tabular summaries for this aspect of intersection design. The details are described of the model in which the percentile storage rquirements in vehicle units are a funtion of left-turn volume, left-turn green time and cycle length and can be applied to through lanes and to right-turn lanes.
