Abstract

The findings are presented of a preliminary study concerning road accidents in a university campus area in Malaysia, which was conducted to determine the extent of the problem and the factors that may contribute to road accidents on university campuses. The study involved analysis of accident data from past accident records, a questionnaire, and traffic flow, speed, and conflict studies. The results obtained provide direction for further detailed investigation. The details are given of the questionnaire and the investigation at accident-prone areas. Conclusions drawn from the study are presented. These conclusions relate to the following: accident prone locations, road user behavior; upgrading traffic control mechanisms; geometric changes to roads; and upgrading of facilities for pedestrians and motorcyclists.
