Abstract

A study is reported which determined the change in accident characteristics and severity at 102 locations in Michigan with newly installed traffic signals, and evaluated the effect of traffic signals at intersections with no geometric changes. Details of the data collection, test of significance, and intersection analysis are presented. The study results compared favorably with past studies. It was found that the mean total accident rate in the 'after' situation was 19.2% lower than before signal installation, and the mean injury accident rate in the 'after' situation was 17% lower than the 'before' condition. It was also fount that the mean rear-end accident rate was 53% higher in the 'after condition. These and other study findings are discussed.
