Abstract

In cases where new freeway systems are being planned and designed or where outdated freeway systems are being redesigned, it is advantageous to know the length required for weaving sections. An equation is given, and it is shown how by transposing the factors of this equation, the length of the weaving section can be determined from a planning or design analysis point of view. In this approach, by establishing a desired level of service, i.e., weaving and non-weaving speeds, it is possible to determine the respective weaving lengths. This is illustrated with an example. A systematic approach to developing the calculation procedure for freeway weaving section lengths is tabulated.
