Abstract

This brief article describes the design and accuracy of the complex electronic measuring systems used in the HESTIA weigh- in-motion (WIM) station. The structure of the station is illustrated, and its general organization described. It consists of an 8 lane 8 megabyte maximum double cased fixed system and a 2 lane 5 megabyte maximum mobile system. Details of the electronic card structure of the HESTIA DU detectors which receive information from the piezo electric sensors and loop detectors situated on the traffic lanes is provided, as are details of the sensors themselves and their layout on the ground. The method by which signal processing is carried out on each of the two piezo electric sensors independently is also described, and this includes brief details of the gain control and the automatic calibration algorithms. The structure of the central unit is similar to that of the DU detector, but the analogue part of the 4 layer card is replaced by a digital part which includes a "real time" clock and three RS232 links. Trials carried out at different sites have demonstrated that there is a high speed accuracy which is independent of weather conditions, that weighing on high quality road surfaces on 4 successive sensors show maximum divergence, and that the divergence between the average measured dynamic weight of 19 vehicles and the average measured static weight is less than 2%.
