Abstract

This article describes the design and testing of two 30 m long full scale pavement test sections constructed along lightly and heavily trafficked roads in Northern Ireland. The first site is located at the Queen's University Halls of Residence and has a 0.5 msa design life. The second site is located at the Hillsborough Bypass on the A1 Belfast to Dublin Highway, and has a 10 msa design life. The top layer in both sites is bituminous layer underlaid by unbound crushed rock materials. Each site is fully instrumented so that deflection, deformation, stress, strain, moisture and temperature at different levels in each pavement will be known at any time. Two types of field tests are conducted both before and after construction of the instrumented sections. These are: a) Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) Tests, which are employed at 3 monthly intervals, and b) Heavy Wheel Load Deflectograph Tests, employed at monthly intervals. The data gathered from these tests are used to back-calculate the elastic moduli of the pavement layers. It is hoped to provide information about the relationships between pavement response and performance criteria. Some examples of data already collected are provided.
