Abstract

The Cozart RapiScan is the world's first fully integrated, onsite, oral fluid based drugs of abuse diagnostic system. This system has been used successfully for a number of different applications including workplace drug testing, monitoring compliance at drug treatment centres, assessing prevalence of drug use in prisons and police custody suites and determining impairment through roadside testing. Roadside testing as with all on-site testing requires a simple but reliable test that can be carried out quickly and safely. The Cozart RapiScan is an innovative drugs of abuse testing system which provides results in a matter of minutes. In addition to rapid results the advantages include, ease of collection, simultaneous detection of up to five different drug groups from a single sample, the results are clearly displayed on the screen as positive or negative and can be printed for a permanent record. Sufficient sample is collected by the system so that the remaining sample can be sent to a designated laboratory for confirmation of presumptive positives. A comparison was carried out between the Cozart RapiScan system and laboratory testing (both immunoassay and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry) for oral fluid samples collected from known drug users. There was excellent agreement between the samples which screened for drugs by the Cozart RapiScan and the laboratory tests. The Cozart RapiScan can provide rapid and reliable oral fluid drug screens by the roadside and could prove useful as an adjunct to the Drug Recognition Exams (DRE's). (Abstract only)
