Abstract

Every year nearly 150 DWI repeat offenders and 100 drivers under suspicion of drug addiction are psychological and medically examined. They are categorized into whether they have or have not the capacity to decide to consume (drug, medicine, alcohol). If incapacity is established life style modification is needed and medical and psychotherapeutic treatment prescribed. If the driver is able to control to a certain degree his consumption, the problem might be tackled using rehabilitation and focusing on their driving. With this in mind the detection of alcoholism in cases of drunken driving is seen as a crucial problem because it allows orientation toward fundamentally different interventions. A study on all drunken driving recorded by the police in Geneva during one year (about 950 cases) was conducted. The measure of a biological marker of alcoholism (GGT) was used to characterize DWI committed by alcoholic drivers. It was estimated that more than a third of DWI were committed by alcoholic drivers and their profile is defined.
