Abstract

The effects of alcohol and drugs have long been identified as determinants of crash severity. However the fact whether their effect is the same at different crash severity levels for different driver age groups are need to be further investigated. With that intention this study developed two sets of sequential binary logistic models to predict the crash severity of young and older drivers. Florida traffic crash database was used in the modeling process. In order to identify the factors related to the particular driver group only single vehicle fixed object crashes were considered. Each model identified the roadway, driver, environmental, and vehicle related factors that are influential towards making a crash severity difference. Both older driver and young driver models identified the use of alcohol and drugs as important throughout all the crash severity levels. However their impact was different between the two unique driver age groups considered. Abstract only in Proceedings.
