Abstract

The extent to which ignition interlock devices are used in programs to rehabilitate drink drivers is outlined. The authors consider that the type of program and how it is administered as well as the key features or elements that govern eligibility and compliance by program participants are as important as the sophistication of the technology used. Examples of their use are considered and a distinction drawn between standards involving judicial or court administered programs and those administered by driver licensing authorities. The duration of schemes and their monitoring and reporting requirements are discussed. Based on this evidence a number of guidelines for delivery standards are suggested.
