Abstract

This paper describes some German information and motivation groups, specially adapted to people who drive when under the influence of alcohol. Such a group aims to encourage its participants to see their own alcohol problem and alter their behaviour as necessary. They are shown how to cope with alcohol in their daily lives and told about the effects of alcohol misuse. People can participate in a group, only after having had talks with an appropriate specialist at an advisory centre for addicts; however, addicts are not allowed to join. The following types of alcohol-prone drivers are suitable for a group: (1) those unaware of the effects of excessive alcohol consumption; (2) those unaware of how far their contact with alcohol has gone; (3) those who have been persuaded to check and change their drinking habits; (4) those who are already changing their drinking habits, and want specialised help through group discussions. All participants must agree to attend group discussions regularly and remain abstinent during the course. They must find out their own alcohol habits, and take responsibility for overcoming them. Since 1988, more than 150 people have participated in these groups; at least 40% of them were able to solve their problems enough to need no more treatment.
