Abstract

Roadside surveys and studies of fatally injured drivers have provided two major sources of information on impaired driving, yet common to both is the problem of missing data. This paper considers the location and shift properties of untested fatalities, and roadside survey nonrespondents in two major Canadian studies. It is observed that dramatic differences exist between the shift sensitivities for the two populations. In light of these findings, consideration is given to the interpretation of data from such epidemiologic studies, and the implications of increases in the rate of testing are explored.
