Abstract

This presentation highlights the new CD-Rom "Impaired Driver Enforcement Program" software being developed in Victoria, Australia. This software provides education on the drugs that impair drivers, plus all the elements of the two new impairment tests that the police will administer, educational administration tools and workbooks. The new impairment assessments consist of a roadside assessment, which is based on the behaviours, and physiological states associated with the major groups of psychoactive drugs found in drivers killed in road crashes in Victoria. Drivers who fail this assessment and have a BAC reading, which is inconsistent with the results of the assessment, are then required to undergo a second assessment. This second assessment is videotaped and has been developed from the American Standard Field Sobriety Test and the details of this test are also discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the educational strategies and methods developed for the multimedia Drugs programs, which uses self-paced computer based learning techniques. These programs will replace the classroom education methods, which have been traditionally used in enforcement education.
