Abstract

A study has been carried out into the incidence of road accidents in a group of 100 young drug-addicts having a history of drug abuse of 24 months. In these subjects the correlation between number and type of accidents and type and state of drug addiction was evaluated. Most of these subjects were using street heroin and marijuana. There was no evidence of greater alcohol consumption. The data relative to this group have been taken from personal anamnestic data and data supplied by the local traffic authorities. This group was compared with a group of young non-drug-addicts of the same age group for the incidence of road accidents. The data arising out of this comparison indicate a high incidence of road accidents in connection with the abuse of addictive substances. This incidence is about 20% greater than that found in the test group. In conclusion it may be noted that drug-addiction causes not only physical, psychological and social damage but also a high incidence of road accidents, the cost of which is subsequently paid by society.
