Abstract

Several countermeasures to combat the problem of driving after drinking have been proposed. Periodic roadside surveys provide one method of monitoring the drinking/driving problem and can produce the information needed for making meaningful evaluations of such countermeasures. In the context of this review of roadside surveys in the Republic of South Africa, the purpose of such surveys can be described as an effort to determine the incidence of alcohol usage by the general road-using public, as well as possible changing patterns in such use.
