Abstract

A rapid GC-MS method is presented for the simultaneous screening and quantition of 39 different drugs in blood including eg. benzodiazepines, opiates, cannabinoids, tricyclic antidepressants. The method was developed in order to detect drugs in driving cases. The sample treatment involved liquid-liquid extraction followed by silylation as a derivatization technique. Screening and quantitation were performed by Agilent Network GC-MS 6890/5973 with HP 35% PH ME siloxane column in SIM mode. In validation tests the method showed good linearity at the relevant concentrations. The attained levels of quantition varied between 2-20000 ng/ml depending on the typical concentrations levels found in blood. Consequently the limits of quantitation were 2-2000 ng/ml. The intra-assay relative standard deviations were 2,28-22,18% and the inaccuracy 0,04-44,7% on cut-off level. Despite large variety of different kind of substances and low detection limits, the method is easy to access. The developed method is especially useful for the routine blood samples drawn from suspected drugged drivers. (Abstract only)
