Abstract

A number of studies have found an association between high-level alcohol consumption, increased sickness absence and disability pensions. Information was obtained from a group of individuals about alcohol consumption habits and other aspects of lifestyle when they began military service in 1969-70. This study examines the role of subsequent hazardous alcohol habits, as indicated by records of drunken driving and in-patient care, with alcohol-related diagnosis for a disability pension in these individuals. The results indicated that the risk of being granted a disability pension or having highly increased sickness absence increased over 3 times if there was a drink driving offence.
