Abstract

Two institutions insisted that drunken drivers who are problem drinkers should not be given back their driving license until they have shown that they were taking steps to control their drinking. However, the question is: "which of the arrested drunken drivers are problem drinkers and which ones are not?" in developing a screening method the brief MAST (Michigan alcoholism screening test) will be administered to plus or minus 1000 drunken drivers. The scores on this test will be correlated with the following variables: (1) bac/refusal to provide specimens for analysis; (2) recidivism; (3) combined use of alcohol and medicine; (4) previous use of tranquilizers; (5) employment situation; (6) day of drunken driving (weekend or working day); (7) time of drunken driving (day, evening, night) and (8) accident/no accident. From the results of this research, it will be possible to see which, if any, criteria can be used as a basis for categorizing the drunken driver. (TRRL)
