Hungary has a leading position in the international statistics of alcohol consumption, occupying the 7th place, within it the third place in the per capita consumption of distilled spirits. Statistics are presented on alcohol-related road accidents in the past three years: for 1978 the total number of accidents was 19945, of which 3305 involved drinking drivers (16.6%); for 1977 the total number of accidents was 20121, of which 3346 involved drinking drivers (16.6%); for 1976 the total number of accidents was 18584, of which 3218 involved drinking drivers (17.3%). In 1978, observing alcohol-related accidents by region, the following difference is to be seen: in Budapest 421 accidents occurred (8.7% of all accidents), in the country 2884 accidents occurred (19.1% of all accidents).
