Abstract

Lung injury was investigated using a 50th percentile male finite element human body model, including a previously developed detailed thorax, subject to lateral pendulum impacts. Improved geometric representations of the lung and heart were implemented in the model and the finite element mesh quality and contact interaction with adjacent anatomical structures was improved. The model was validated against experimental impact tests using force and compression response. Pulmonary contusion was predicted based on four injury metrics, and found to be consistent with predicted AIS levels using the Viscous Criterion.
