Abstract

Many field studies of accidents have identified head and face impacts with the steering wheel as a predictable occurrence for the driver restrained by a lap-diagonal seat belt (1-8). The intentions of the present paper are two-fold. Firstly, it examines the frequency of such head strikes for seriously and fatally injured drivers using an accident sample that is demonstrated to be representative in terms of police reported variables of all accidents in a large study area. Secondly, the nature of the injuries resulting from such contacts are described to help indicate the types of injury tolerance data that are most applicable to this situation.
