Abstract

Field studies of motorcycle accidents provide the only method to obtain base line injury data, and to set up realistic parameters for future controlled collisions. This clinical, in-depth study reveals definite predictable injury patterns associated with occupant kinematic motion and helmet use. Although limited in number, certain conclusions are indicated by this study of injury production. Safety for motorcyclists, except for helmets, has been little explored. Recommendations, based on the specific injury patterns and accident causation found in the different types of collisions, are presented.
