Abstract

A method was developed for determining the intensity of pressure distribution over the contact areas of tires. Two tires representing extreme conditions of cushioning, a solid rubber tire and a thin-walled, low- pressure pneumatic tire, both smooth tread, were subjected to a 4,000-lb. load. The method of measurement was described. The equipment included a universal testing machine, bearing plate, friction bar and filler plates (shim stock). Tests showed that the maximum load intensities occurred in two transversely symmetrical zones rather than at the geometric centers of the areas. Analysis of the data suggested the possibility that an ellipsoidal distribution, in which the pressure intensity varied as the ordinates to a semi-ellipsoidal surface of definite proportions.
