Abstract

Brenda Colson was sentenced to four years in jail after witnessing her HIV-positive husband rape her seven-year-old daughter. Colson, at the time, thwarted her 10-year-old son's attempt to call the police. The rape, which resulted in the HIV infection of her daughter, occurred just three hours after Colson married Frank Bridges. The Superior Court Judge felt Colson deserved a more severe penalty because she failed to protect her daughter from the danger posed by Bridges' daily drug use and bizarre behavior. Bridges pleaded guilty last June to five felony counts of rape and child molestation. He is serving a 38-year prison sentence.
