Abstract

Recreational drug use in patients on antiviral therapy can have fatal consequences. Levels of the drug Ecstasy can be increased dangerously in people taking ritonavir, especially in people with some liver dysfunction. There are few studies being done by drug manufacturers on illegal substances, and it is unlikely that there will be any conducted due to ethical and legal issues. A guide is provided to several common recreational drugs, Ecstasy, cocaine, poppers (volatile nitrates), GHB, and Ketamine, that lists street names, effects, and special considerations for people with HIV.
