Abstract

The Urak Lawoi are a group of indigenous fishermen divers living and working on Thailand's west coast. A project team addressed occupational health promotion through a series of training, educational, and informational activities with a view to improving health outcomes. Educational activities were designed and implemented for public health physicians, public health workers, and diving boat chiefs. Workshops for physicians included the medical aspects of diving and differential diagnosis of decompression illness. Workshops for public health care workers included questionnaire implementation; the physiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of decompression illness; the development and utilization of informational tools (using job safety analysis); and a train-the-trainer course. An awareness-raising workshop was also held for the boat chiefs. Informational activities included the design and distribution of 10 hazard information datasheets based on rules for safer diving. The direction for future activities is also presented.
