Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To determine the pattern and magnitude of the problem of anorectal injuries at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. DESIGN: Prospective cross sectional descriptive study. SETTING: Department of Surgery, College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Nigeria. SUBJECTS: 51 consecutive paediatric patients treated for anorectal injuries over a three year period. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Mechanism of rectal injury, contributing factors, anatomic region injured, length of hospital stay, complications and outcome.
