Abstract

The UK Institution of Occupational Safety and Health has established a Register of Safety Practitioners: a formal list of professionally qualified and experienced people who are competent, in the opinion of the Institution, to give advice to employers and others about the identification and control of workplace hazards. As part of the process of establishing the Register, the Institution required an inventory of core safety practitioner tasks as a basis for assessing the practical ability of applicants. The paper presents the core tasks of safety practitioners in a suitable format for evaluating practical ability at two levels of competency. The task descriptions as developed take into account the diversity of workplaces in which safety practitioners work; the participation of topic specialists, such as occupational hygienists, in preventive work; and the appointment of managers in some enterprises to manage the safety service. The proposed task description of a Registered Safety Practitioner was accepted by the Institution with minor amendments, and now forms the basis of the application form for entry to the Register.
